Year 2 Spring Term 2026

Welcome to Year 2, 2025–2026

Hello Year 2!

We hope you had a lovely Christmas break and are feeling happy, rested and ready to continue our Year 2 journey together. We have lots of fun learning, exciting activities and special moments planned and we can’t wait to see your smiling faces back in the classroom. Just a friendly reminder that children should come to school wearing their PE kits on Tuesday and Wednesday. From Miss Smith, Mrs Weetman and Mrs Price, we’re really looking forward to a brilliant term with you all! 😊

Year 2 Weekly Timetable

Things you need for Year 2
  • Labelled uniform
  • A water bottle with your child’s name on
  • A book bag
  • Reading diary
  • Children will need to come to school in their PE kits on TUESDAY and WEDNESDAY.
  • No Toys

Snacks/Lunchtime

Please remember – our school is nut-free!
Some children in our school have nut allergies, so we all need to help keep them safe by not bringing nuts to school.

In Key Stage One, you will get fruit at snack time. If you would like to, you can also bring a healthy snack from home.

Year 2 Reading Diaries

Our  purple reading diaries will continue to record any reading at both school and home. It is important that your child brings it to school every day so that adults can record any reading that has taken place during the school day.

Reading in Year 2

Your child will bring home:

  • A ‘Big Cat, Little Wandle’ reading book.
This is a book your child has read at least three times during group reading sessions in school. By the time it comes home, they should be able to read it with around 95% fluency. The purpose of practising at home is to build reading confidence and reinforce the skills learned in school. The book may seem “too easy” or very familiar, but this is an important part of the process—it helps children celebrate their success as readers.

  • An additional reading book carefully matched to the same level as the ‘Big Cat’ book.

Reading books are changed once a week, and choices are closely monitored using phonics and reading assessments across the year.

We also place a strong emphasis on reading for pleasure. A varied diet of books—stories, poems, and non-fiction—will help nurture your child’s curiosity and love of reading, an invaluable life skill.

PE

We really enjoy PE in Year 2!

Our PE days are Tuesday and Wednesday – please come to school in your outdoor PE kit on those days. We will try to be outside as much as possible, so remember:

  • Wear your school hoodie on cooler days.

  • Bring a waterproof jacket for rainy days.

  • Bring a water bottle on warmer days.

  • Earrings must be removed for PE, or you can bring tape to cover them.

Hoodie

Joggers

Pikemere PE polo shirt

Trainers

Long hair to be tied up on PE days

Year 2 Homework

I will be setting My Maths homework on a Wednesday to be completed for the following Monday.

To access the My Maths tasks you will need to log on to your account and there are email notifications to tell you when a new task is set. Your child will receive a letter with login details.

If you don't have access to a device a paper copy can be created for your child.

Maths in Year 2

  • There are lots of resources to help you with learning at home:

  • Practise your 2, 5 and 10 times tables so you can use TT Rock Stars.

  • Search for ‘Hit the Button’ to practise your maths skills.

  • Search for ‘Daily 10 Top Marks’ to work on your times tables.

  • Keep practising your number bonds to 10, 20 and 100!

You’ll find useful links at the bottom of this page.

Time

In Year 2, we will be learning to tell the time to the nearest 5 minutes. If possible, please help your child get familiar with an analogue clock at home. Any extra practice with telling the time is always encouraged!

There are lots of fun online games to try, such as those on the Top Marks website. You might also like to get your child their own analogue watch (though this is not compulsory).

In class, we will have a ‘time teller’ each day. They will wear our class watch and help us tell the time at different points throughout the day!

Year 2 English

These are called ‘Common Exception Words’ because they do not follow the usual spelling rules. For example, ‘sugar’ does not start with ‘sh’.
