Intent

Through our Science curriculum at Pikemere School, we aim to develop children's understanding of the world around them through the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics. We strive to develop and nurture inquisitive minds, equipping our children with the skills needed to find answers to their own questions.

Implementation

In EYFS, children learn science through Understanding the World. This is delivered through both indoor and outdoor environments, small-group activities and enhancements to continuous provision. Learning is driven by children’s interests, topical events and structured learning opportunities. Topics are mapped for each term. However, flexibility is maintained to allow learning to take place at different points throughout the year in response to these factors.

In KS1 and KS2, children follow the National Curriculum for Science. Teaching and learning are supported through:

  • Building on prior knowledge and understanding
  •  Progressive development of skills from basic to advanced and deep understanding
  • Weekly lessons incorporating both theoretical learning and practical enquiry
  • Regular opportunities to work scientifically
  • Opportunities to make predictions and test theories
  • Development of scientific vocabulary, explanations and correct use of equipment
  • Participation in National Science Week
  • Educational visits and enrichment opportunities
  • First-hand experiences that allow children to observe, explore and deepen their understanding
Impact
  • Children demonstrate curiosity by working scientifically and showing a desire to find answers to their own questions.
  • Children develop a secure understanding of the world around them, which forms the foundation for the specific disciplines of Biology, Chemistry and Physics in later education.
  • Children are well-prepared, both in skills and knowledge, for the next stage of their education.
